Mt. Lemmon Overland Run

Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ June 12, 2026

Trip Report

We staged our trip at the base of Mt. Lemmon along Catalina Highway, Jeep half doors installed and our overland trailer in tow.

The lower section of the mountain is classic Sonoran Desert: rocky terrain, towering saguaros, and temperatures that feel much like the valley below. As we passed the familiar shooting pullout, the crack of gunfire echoed off the canyon walls. The road climbs steadily toward Windy Point Vista, where sweeping views stretch across the desert and dramatic rock formations attract climbers from around the region.

Near Rose Canyon Lake, the landscape begins its transformation. Ponderosa pines replace cactus, the air grows noticeably cooler, and the scent of the forest drifts through the open windows. By the time you reach elevations around 8,300 feet, you'll likely find your arm resting outside the window, enjoying the crisp mountain air.

Beyond the Palisades Visitor Center at Mile Marker 18, Bear Wallow Road branches off to the right. From there, numerous dispersed campsites can be found tucked among the trees on both sides of the road. We have our favorites, but part of the adventure is discovering your own.
